About the Exhibiton
I have always been facinated by Zebra. They are truely free spirits and despite attempts by humans to tame them they remain wild and undomesticated. A group of Zebra is termed a DAZZLE and I can understand why. They number in their thousands as they accompany the wildebeest during the annual migration across the Serengeti and Masai Mara - this is where they truely DAZZLE. In addition to their striking patterns and colours, they display many human qualities. They unashamedly share their lives with each other and are dedicated to their young. Much like humans, they squabble endlessly but remain committed to living in close family groups. Attacks on Zebra do occur but mercifully they are usually lightening fast. Should a youngster fall to one of the many animals that prey on them, the family gather around and seemly comfort the shocked mother.
I see their most amusing characteristic as their apparent desire to represent themselves as a group of upwardly mobile executives or sometimes a group of giggling schoolgirls. They regularly stand around in small groups with their heads close together giving the impression they are whispering conspiratorial secrets as they occasionally glance around and bray or whinny. All the while they slavishly conform but also desperately try to appear as individuals. It is this endearing characterisitic that I have sought to capture in my images.
